2024 Midweek League

The VDCA Division II: Midweek League provides a welcoming environment for cricketers of all ages and abilities.

Matches are played on weeknights between April and August at venues across the city, and generally run around two hours in duration. While remaining very competitive, matches are played with a spirit of inclusion and encouragement, and most teams are affiliated with one of Victoria's many fine public houses which allows post-match dissection and discussion long after the final ball.

Playing Conditions:

The following playing conditions shall apply to all Division II: Midweek League matches played under the administration of the Victoria and District Cricket Association (VDCA).

 

Except as varied hereunder, the Laws of Cricket (2017 Code 3rd Edition 2022) shall apply.

While remaining very competitive, matches are played with a spirit of inclusion and encouragement, and most teams are affiliated with one of Victoria's many fine public houses which allows post-match dissection and discussion long after the final ball.

2024 Competition Rules

  1. Team fee $700 payable to the VDCA, $100 to Midweek-League Cricket.

  2. Waiver must be completed online & $30 registration fee paid prior to first game. Players not registered are not eligible to play.

    1. If a team uses an ineligible player, they will forfeit any points.

      1. Examples of ineligible players:

        1. Unregistered player

        2. More than one stat player

        3. Players who play for other teams (without the express wishes of the opposition captain)

  3. The 2024 season will consist of two tiers. Tier one will have 9 teams playing home and away matches for 16 total per club. Tier 2 will have 16 matches per club. Matches are to commence no later than 6pm - earlier if possible with prior agreement.

    1. Playoffs will be the same for both tiers. Top 4 teams, #1 ranked vs #4 ranked and #2 ranked vs #3 ranked with the winners playing for the final. 

    2. Tie breakers will be head to head, and if multi-way ties occur, with no one team winning against the rest, it will go to NRR to determine​

    3. Teams shall consist of 9 players - listed to opposing captain prior to start of game upon request. Each side will receive 16 overs of 6 balls and 12 overs of 8 balls for playoffs.

    4. The bottom two teams in tier 1 will be relegated to tier 2 in 2025. The top team in the regular season of teir 2 will have voluntary promotion to tier 1 in 2025. The winner of the playoffs in tier 2 will also have voluntary promotion to tier 1. 

      1. If teams in tier ​2 that choose not to be promoted, it will go to the next higher ranked team. If no teams decide to be promoted, then the relegated teams will have a choice to stay, or tier 1 will be reduced in size for the next season.

  4. No team shall include more than 1 'Stat' player(s) who featured in the preceding season's statistics (see below), or anyone who has represented BC or Canada in the preceding two years. This also includes new season imports.

  5. Bowlers limited to 3 overs each for regular season, 2 for playoffs and a run-up of no more than 6 yards.

    1. Six-yard mark to be painted on all fields for bowling start line.

    2. Wide line to be marked on both sides

  6. Scorecards will be required to be completed, or a clear photo sent in, by the Sunday night of the week played or a loss of one point will be deducted

    1. New website scoring will allow the scores to be completed at the game with most phone devices

  7. One run awarded for each wide/no-ball bowled to a maximum of 4 in any one over. The bowler to continue until 6 fair balls are bowled.

    1. Extras will be counted on a delivery basis. If a player bowls four deliveries of wides or no balls total (1 wide, 3 no balls; 2 wides, 2 no balls; etc) the following delivery that is deemed to be a wide or no ball will immediately be called a dead ball and no runs will be tallied, additionally the batsmen cannot be dismissed. The bowler will continue bowling until 6 legitimate deliveries have been bowled.

  8. Bouncers and Beamers with the intent to harm are not accepted and may result in removal from bowling.

  9. Eligibility for playoffs will be 4 games.

  10. Registered players will only play for one club throughout the season.

    1. if any inimical circumstances result in a player requesting to play for another club, they must email the league secretary for review.

  11. Appeals for LBW will be frowned upon.

  12. All batsmen must retire after scoring 25 runs. If one of the last pair of batsmen is out, the other batsman may bat on to his maximum of 25.

  13. 2 points will be awarded for a win, 1 point for a tie or draw and 0 points for a loss.

    1. All efforts should be made to obtain a result. In regular season, a tie is a tie.

    2. if clubs forfeit more than 4 matches in a season, they will be put on suspension for the following season. All future forfeits after the 4th instance will result in -1 point.

  14. Dress: All white or matching shirts and trousers. It is the captain's responsibility to insist on the dress code for his team.

    1. If a player wears their box on the outside of their clothing, they will be deemed out immediately and the club fined $25 which will go towards a box supplied by the league.

  15. If bad weather stops play, a waiting period to be observed at the captain's' discretion before the match is abandoned. Points shall be shared (drawn match).

  16. Conduct: Please refer to the VDCA Code of Conduct for on and off-field behaviour however, written statements concerning misconduct or unfair play will need to be sent to the Midweek League Fairness Committee (c/o President). This will only be received within 7 days of the incident.

  17. Helmets must be worn by all youth players when batting. Each club's equipment must include a legal cricket helmet.

    1. A youth is considered under the age of 21 years.
